This or that questions

This or that is the fastest warm-up for a big group or a short meeting. Each question has two options, so answers take a second, and nobody has to think of something interesting to say on the spot.

Run several questions back to back as a quick round, or use one as a light start to a stand-up. They work well in chat, too: everyone types their answer at the same time and the meeting can see the split straight away.

Tips for using these questions

  • Do five in a row at speed rather than one slowly.
  • In a video call, ask everyone to answer in the chat at the same moment, then read out the split.
  • Follow up on the surprising answers. Someone who prefers voice notes always has a reason.

Questions people ask

How many this or that questions should I use in one session?

One question is enough for a regular meeting. For a workshop or a team's first session, two or three work well. Save the rest for later meetings so they stay fresh.

What if someone does not want to answer?

Let them pass, without comment. A forced answer makes the whole group less comfortable, and the point of an icebreaker is the opposite.
